Reasons why not to be in the food and beverage business

1) You are working while others are playing.  Frequently the food and beverage industry requires you to work nights, holidays and weekends while others are off.
2) Long hours at times when other employees don’t show up for their shift.  As a working owner inevitably issues occur which require long hours on a regular basis.
3) Having to deal with unreasonable employees, customers, bosses and vendors.
4) There can be a high stress level for employees and/or owners for various problems that occur.  Such problems may include as follows:
a. short staffed for employees that don’t show up,
b. impolite customers,
c. running  out of food and beverage products during operating hours,
d.  unexpected maintenance problems and various equipment not working.
5) Physical and mental challenges.  This includes the following:
a. having to stand on your feet for long hours,
b. lifting heavy items, and
c. dealing with erratic work demands due to the peaks and valleys of the business which creates added stress.
6) High turnover of employees for some positions.
7) Unanticipated maintenance items and government requirements can be very expensive.
8) There is intense competition in this industry and the success rate is low.

In life there are usually positives and negatives in whatever you pursue.  As long as the positives out weigh the negatives and you enjoy what you’re doing I would highly recommend you pursue the food and beverage industry as a career.
